Influence From Other Music Videos

From this task I have gained a bigger understanding of what my final music video will look like, I have thought more about what the band will look like and how they will perform. I have also thought about composition and the way the band will be laid out in each shot. This task has also helped me begin to think about how I will edit the music video to make it more visually engaging.

Theory

From this task I have learnt about how effective editing and dynamic camera angles can make a music video more visually engaging to an audience. I have also discovered that I need to reflect the mood of the song I choose within my music video through the editing, camera angles and mise en scene.

Genre Research

The genre I am most interested in making a music video for is Punk or Pink Rock. Punk Rock was at it's peak between 1974 and 1976 in the Untied States and the United Kingdom. The genres main themes are about making a political statement, anti-establishment and left wing ideas. The most notable bands are The Clash and The Sex Pistols. Also at this time Ska and Reggae were popular and bands such as The Clash took influence from this.

From this task I have learnt how much that Punk changed over time and what inspired Punk to become a new music genre. I will take influence from what made "Anarchy In the UK"and "Should I Stay or Should I Go?" successful music videos and make sure I use some of the conventions that are featured in these shows in my music video.

Influence of Style

Punk Mood Board on PhotoPeach

From this I have started to put some ideas in place for the production of my music video. I have used the band the Vamps as an influence of my band will look like and an idea of what I could put on my album cover. I am quite keen to film some stock footage style shots as they use this in most Clash videos. To create this sort of affect on the video will have to learn how to add film grain and change the aspect ratio to a 4.3 scale. I will also be influenced by the composition and framing of the television series Utopia by this I mean I will shoot the music video in a 16.9 or letterbox aspect ratio. They use a lot of flat on long shot angles so I will take this into account and put this into my story board when I come to plan the music video. I will also use a high saturation for most of the shots to create a visually engaging series of shots.

Analysis of Music Videos

From this I have learnt the ways that Punk music videos use different shots and editing to present their band. I have learnt if there is a slow introduction of instruments if you cut to the different instruments as they are introduced to the song. It is also effective if you contrast the band to an institution or an idea by cutting away to different footage breaking up the narrative.

Record Labels Research

From this task I have discovered how much of an impact record labels have on the bands music, branding and success in the public eye and the chart positions. It has given me an insight into what company I will have to consider to work with in my band that I will have to create. It seams to me that the American companies such as CBS generally give the bands more international success because they distribute their music to American audiences, which tend to give the band more long lasting popularity.

Conventions of a Music Video

Below is an analysis of 5 Punk Rock music videos in which I discovered the conventions of music videos from this genre.

By doing this I have discovered that most punk bands seem to try and direct their marketing to a teenage/adolescent audience. They do this by their untidy, messy and rebellious look and the way they behave towards the camera. I have taken note of the fact that when I choose someone to perform in my music video I will need to direct them to perform in this energetic way. In terms of the camera angles when the band is performing low angles are the most commonly used this is because the Punk bands want to look dominant and powerful. I will definitely use this idea in my music video.

The History of Music Videos

Below is a Prezi showing the timeline of Music Videos:

From this I have learnt that if I am to use a classic song then I will need to respect the way that music is produced today. So I could use an old song but I will need to market them as a current brand and promote them in a way that a band would be today rather than the time the song was released.
