Music Video Opening

Below is a possible opening to my music video, I wanted it to look like the video was be broadcast during a civil war adding the rebellious theme of the band. I think I might change a few things about this edit but I will need to see it with the rest of the music video to know if it fits.

Audience Feedback Evaluation

For this task I had to put together a focus group, my focus group were 3 teenagers aged 17 and 18 as they are the target audience for this band. Below is their reactions to the initial screening...
  • Good Shots and Framing
  • Lip Sync in time although the punch at the start is slightly off
  • Lighting is too dark on some shots
  • The juxtaposition of the moving and tripod shots doesn't work
  • Use of text is good but needs to be more thought out
  • Good Introduction
  • Editing needs to punch more in time to the music
  • Needs to be more rebellious & edgy
  • Use more angles from the band performance location

Pitch For Ideas

My music video will feature 4 Band Members seemingly performing the song live in a dystopian landscape conventional of Punk music videos. It will tell the story of a group of penniless men that went to fight the laws/regime to make the world how they think it should be run and the repercussions of their actions. The performance will be conventional of a punk music video, with angry actions and facial expressions. The band will look and act rebellious to please the target audience, and make them feel normal seeing that there is other people that are unhappy with the current political system. The music video starts with a fade in of drums, for this I plan to track in from a long distance to the band who are talking when the music kicks in the lead singer punches the lens sending the camera spinning. At this point the background goes black and the band name "The Smash" flashes on screen accompanied with a glitch affect. From that point on the music video will be a mixture of live and narrative sequences. The narrative points will consist of the band running around in different run down locations, looking like they are "fighting the laws" and being rebellious. Each shot will be cut in time with the strong tempo of the song making the overall video very energetic and fast paced.

Magazine Advert Plan

Here is the magazine advert plan I have created for my band, I have taken a lot of influence from classic bands such as The Beatles and modern bands such as 5SOS and Mumford and Sons. The background will be black and the text will be white, the photos will be edited in such a way that they look like old Polaroid style photos.

Music Video Timeline

Embedded in this page is the timeline I created for my music video. This task has helped me iron out parts of the music video that I hadn't of yet planned. I know feel that my music video is a strong piece that integrates narrative and band performance equally and effectively.

Editing Software Plan

The editing software I plan to use for the construction of my music video will be Adobe Premiere Pro, Adobe After Affects and Adobe Photoshop. I want to use a lot of post production affects to make it look like a semi found footage based video. Film Burns, Glitch Affects and Old Film dust spots will feature heavily in the music video. Below is a video of a piece of test footage to see how the glitch affect and colour grading would work...

Analysis of Song Lyrics

Below is a document showing how I will visually interpret the song lyrics, not including the instrumental sections of the song. As the song repeats the same lyrics a lot throughout the song, I will need to think of lots of ways of depicting this but still keeping it visually engaging. One of the ways I could do this is by adding the words on the screen and adding slight differences every time it comes to that part of the song.

Below is the photos and Raw Footage of the locations I will use in my music video...

  1. Most of the music video will be in this location, there is a raised platform on which my band will perform the song on.

Artist Styling/Costume Planning

I plan to style my band like a modern punk/rock band or in other words a New Wave Punk band, as I want bring Punk to a new era of fans. Because if I were to style them like a band from the original Punk era it wouldn't work in a modern context. The main band I will take influence from in terms of style would be The Arctic Monkeys, the Rockabilly/Mod fashion is the most conventional of modern bands of this genre.

Below are some images of the type of clothing that I will get my performers to wear...

I will call my band The Smash I came up with this name by merging the band names of The Jam, The Clash and The Sex Pistols...

Below is some ideas of what I the bands logo could be...

Here I have clearly taken influence from the Arctic Monkeys Logo as seen below...
